Step-by-Step: Moving a Person from a Wheelchair to the ToiletMoving a Person from a Wheelchair to the Toilet.Begin by washing your hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds.Move the person close to the toilet and lock their wheelchair.Remove the footrests or push them to the side.Position the person’s feet on the floor in line with their knees.Put a gait belt around the person’s waist to help you with the transfer.Grasp the back of the gait belt. Keep your knees bent and your back straight as you support the person into astanding position. Keep the person’s weaker knee between your legs.Pivot the person to stand in front of the toilet. Always turn toward the person’s stronger side.Gently lower the person down onto the toilet.
