When your teen has type 1 diabetes, things can feel a bit more complicated.For example, your child's insulin dose, the types of insulin, and how your child takes insulin may change over time, especially during the teen years.As most teens do, your teen may be going to bed late at night. Sleeping late in the morning. Eating at odd times. All normal teenage behavior. But these things—they can mess with blood sugar.So while your teen is trying to fit in with other kids and find their independence, they are also managing diabetes.It may help to remind each other that no one knows for sure why someone develops type 1 diabetes or how to prevent it.Encourage your child to continue taking more responsibility for managing diabetes. That gives your teen the independence they may crave right now.Tell your teen it's okay to talk about having diabetes. They may be surprised by how much their friends and teachers want to help and support them in managing their diabetes.Let them know you're always there to support them. Teens may act out, but they still need to know they have your support and guidance.Encourage activities with your teen's friends that get them moving.As you probably know, teens can eat.
