But after a week, blood pressure usually returns to normal.However, some people develop high blood pressure weeks or even months after giving birth. In fact, problemswith high blood pressure can happen up to 6 months after delivery, even if your blood pressure was normalduring pregnancy. This is called Postpartum Hypertension.If left untreated, it can lead to serious health problems, such as: Heart attack; Stroke; Vision loss; Or organdamage.High blood pressure can also be a warning sign of postpartum preeclampsia. This is a serious condition thatcan be life-threatening if left untreated. It can develop up to 6 weeks after delivery.The only way to know if your blood pressure is high is to measure it. So your healthcare provider will checkyour blood pressure at each postpartum visit. They may also ask you to check it at home.If you notice signs of a possible problem, seek help. Call your healthcare provider right away if you have any ofthese symptoms: A very bad headache; Vision changes, like blurriness or sensitivity to light; Swelling in yourface, arms, or legs; Pain in your belly near your ribs; Nausea and vomiting; Shortness of breath; Urinating lessoften; Or fast weight gain.Postpartum high blood pressure is serious, but treatable.
