And it’s part of good health care.You can start by finding a doctor or midwife you're comfortable with—comfortable enough to talkopenly about anything, including your substance use. This can help them take better care of you.It can take courage to talk to your doctor or midwife about everything that’s going on in your life. Soyou can always ask a friend, a loved one, or your partner to be with you for support during prenatalvisits.Together, you and your doctor or midwife can decide if you need treatment and what kind.Treatment can include counseling.Joining a support group can help too. Look for a group that is kind and helpful about substance useand pregnancy.Your doctor may also prescribe medicines to help you quit and to help you get through any withdrawalsymptoms. If you use opioids like oxycontin or heroin, your doctor can prescribe safer medicines orhelp you find another doctor who can.Now, some areas have laws about pregnancy and substance use.
